Assam, a Northeastern state of India, is divided into 33 administrative geographical units called Districts. Assam has 33 districts. Before 2015 it (Name of Districts in Assam) had 27 districts in total. On 15 August 2015, CM Tarun Gogoi formed 5 Districts more, for a total of 32 districts. On 26 January 2016, 2 more districts were formed, but due to administrative infrastructure problem (Name of Districts in Assam and Pin Code List) these districts are still non-functional. After his tenure, new CM Sarbananda Sonowal formed a new one, for a total of 33 districts.

New Districts Introduction

A district of an Indian state is an administrative geographical unit, headed by the Deputy Commissioner (DC), which combines the offices of the District Magistrate ultimately responsible for maintaining law and order and is also responsible for collection of the revenue. Generally, an officer belonging to the Indian Administrative Service becomes the DC but occasionally (Name of Districts in Assam and Pin Code List) officers belonging to the State Civil Service (like ACS) too get appointed. The DC is assisted by a number of officials belonging to different wings of the administrative services of the state. Assam is divided into 33 administrative geographical units of districts, which are further divided into 78 subdivisions, which are the administrative units. The districts are demarcated on the basis of the features such as the rivers, hills, forests, etc. The majority of the newly (Name of Districts in Assam and Pin Code List) constituted districts are sub-divisions of the earlier districts. On 15 August 2015, five new districts were formed in addition to former 27 districts which are Biswanath, Charaideo, Hojai, South Salmara-Mankachar and West Karbi Anglong. On 27 June 2016, Majuli was also declared as a district. Karbi Anglong is the largest district of Assam (Name of Districts in Assam and Pin Code List) with nearly 10,434 square kilometers of undivided area followed by Sonitpur with an area of 5324 square kilometers. Majuli carved out of the Northern parts of Jorhat is the first river island district of India.

Earlier Assam had 27 districts in total

On August 15 2015, Tarun Gogoi the then Chief Minister of Assam announced the Crreation of five new districts taking the total number of districts to 32.The five new districts were-
  • Biswanath(Carved out of Sonitpur)
  • Charaideo(Carved out of Sibsagar)
  • Hojai(Carved out of Nagaon)
  • South Salamara-Mankachar(Carved out of Dhubri)
  • West Karbi Anglong(Carved out of Karbi Anglong)
Again on 26 January 2016,two more districts were added- East Kamrup(Carved out of Kamrup Metro) and South Kamrup(Carved out of Kamrup Rural). Then again Sarbananda Sonowal the Present Chief Minister of Assam Announced Majuli as a dictrict on June 27, 2016 Making it the Only River Island District of India. Thus Assam now has a total of 35 districts. But On October 7,2016 the the state cabinet decided to cancel the district status of South Kamrup and East Kamrup citing lack of infrastructure.Thus Assam is now left with 33 districts. (Name of Districts in Assam and Pin Code List)
